Botticelli Bob is about to become the hair of the summer

In an era of summer hairstyles defined by short hair and minimalist looks, the biggest debut of the season was undoubtedly Botticelli Bob.

From Laura Harrier to Kristen Bell, we’re seeing more and more celebrities rocking the loose S-curl revival wave. For those of us who already have Bob, this look takes our spring-loaded soft wave strands to a new level. And for the rest, especially those who eventually tend to cut their hair off for seasonal tendencies, this Bob is a beginner’s dream because it’s so effortless to style.

Says Sebastian Professional International stylist Anthony Cole, “It’s the perfect summer look to replenish moisture and minimize the use of hot tools.” Preparation is as easy as a simple formula of moisturizing and volumizing products, quick braids and a little overnight magic.

“Botticelli Bob is perfect for the ‘busy woman’ because you can get ready at night, get up in the morning, take out the braids, put your hands through and hit the road,” Cole explains.

Depending on the desired volume and thickness of the hair, you can create the look with two or three braids (the more braids, the more waves and the more structure). If braids aren’t your strong suit, Cole recommends using a two-strand version. For a two-strand braid, hold two sections of hair in your hands and twist the two strands together,” he explains. In the morning, untwist the braids and gently finger comb the hair.

Cole recommends starting your hair’s nighttime routine with products that help repair damage, such as Sebastian Professional No. Breaker and moisturizers like Sebastian Professional Potion 9. “When you apply the products the night before and then braid your hair, your hair absorbs the benefits all night long,” Cole says. “It all helps keep your hair in place the next day. Once you add moisture and lock it in, it stays in your hair until you wash it again.”

If you accidentally miss night prep and aren’t opposed to heat styling, there are last-minute options for looks: simply complete the first step by spraying braids with heat protectant and then using a blow dryer or flat heating iron. Let the braid cool before separating.

No need to worry about summer humidity ruining the durability of the “do” either. Surprisingly, Cole says the heat works in our favor. “It’s especially good for summer because the heat and moisture compliment the style and enhance the look, so you’re fighting the weather instead of fighting it,” Cole says.

Next-day hair isn’t a barrier to this style, either. If you want to amplify the look throughout the week, Cole recommends adding more styling products, such as Sebastian Professional Potion 9, and layering in a lightweight mousse. “This layering technique will lock in moisture, give control, and add smoothness and elasticity,” he says. “Then, put the same braid back in before bed and you’ll wake up the next day with more texture and body.”
